本集主要讲述了Monica和Phoebe在街上遇见一个大帅哥,Monica在Phoebe怂恿下给帅哥whistle却害帅哥北救护车撞昏迷在医院中,两人便把帅哥当作白马王子幻想对象不辞辛劳照顾昏迷的帅哥,帅哥醒后却连句谢谢也没有使两人失望透顶;Chandler的妈妈Mrs. Bing在巡回签售自己新书的时候来到纽约,与几位老友一起吃饭,Ross受到Rachel和Paolo的刺激喝多了亲了Chandler的妈妈,被Chandler知道之后他勃然大怒,却也因此事和Mrs. Bing有了一次深刻的母子交流......
一开场Monica和Phoebe在一个报刊亭旁(newsstand)边,Phoebe本想买昨天的报纸看今天自己的星运(horoscope)准不准,Monica看到一个帅哥,马上激动的拉住Phoebe说,Oh my God. Phoebe. Don't look now, but behind us is a guy who has the potential to break our hearts and plunge us into a pit of depression.解释下Monica对那位帅哥的描述,是帅到"会让她们伤心欲绝并使她们坠入绝望的深渊"的地步.随后Monica的woo-woo把那位超级帅哥送到了医院的病房里昏迷不醒.Monica在一旁自责,Phoebe说, I just wish there was something we could do. Hello. Hello, Coma Guy. GET UP, YOU GIRL SCOUT! UP! UP! UP!这里解释下Girl Scout,是女童子军的意思.童子军是一个世界性的非赢利性组织,小孩子在10到17岁的青少年阶段可以申请加入童子军,其中男童子军(Boy Scout)成立于1907年,女童子军组织成立于1910年,其创建者是英国人Robert Baden-Powell's 爵士,他曾是英军的陆军中将.Monica和Phoebe两个花痴在那边猜帅哥的职业,Phoebe说,Yeah, but did you see the dents in his knuckles? Dead guy getting hit in the groin twenty, thirty times! No?咳...本来想前面偷下懒不介绍Weekend At Bernie's的剧情,但是看来这里还必须要介绍.这个片子讲的是2个保险公司职员因为为一个保险诈骗案查处了线索而被老板Bernie奖励到他的海滨别墅去度假,实际上这个诈骗案老板自己有所参与,他想借机杀掉2个职员灭口,谁知Bernie被诈骗案同伙先杀了,两个小职员去了别墅发现了之后为了怕别人怀疑是自己杀的而隐瞒Bernie已经挂了的事实,费尽心机,使出浑身的解数想把这个假象撑到周末结束.所以Chandler话中说的Dead guy就是指的Bernie.Rachel对Chandler说她超喜欢他妈妈的书,Chandler说,Yeah, well, you wouldn't think it was cool if you're eleven years old and all your friends are passing around page 79 of 'Mistress Bitch.'这里是说Chandler小时候11岁的时候他的朋友们就拿他妈妈书中的'Mistress Bitch'嘲弄Chandler.Ross也在一边附和道, C'mon, Chandler, I love your mom. Rigatoni是意大利通心粉的一种,Pasta in ribbed, slightly curved, large-sized tubes.这里是拿Rigatoni暗指Paolo.电视那边Chandler的妈妈Mrs. Bing登场了,主持人问她在伦敦被捕是怎么回事,Phoebe问Chandler怎么你妈妈被捕了,Chandler说,Shhh, busy beaming with pride.这里Chandler是说反话,嘘...我正感到无比骄傲呢!(没空回答你的问题).电视中Chandler的妈妈Mrs. Bing回答道,This is kind of embarrassing, but occasionally after I've been intimate with a man...I just get this craving for Kung Pow Chicken.这里解释下intimate,这个词字面上是亲密的,隐私的,但是这个词还可以指与某人"亲热".Kung Pow Chicken相信大家听也听出来了,就是享誉中外的川菜"宫保鸡丁".Mrs. Bing的这句话搞的我一头雾水,打太极也不是这么打的吧?然后主持人问她是不是要开始全国的巡回签售,她说她明天前往纽约,尽管她不喜欢那个城市但是她可以见到她心爱的儿子.接着说, I am a fabulous mom! I bought my son his first condoms.句中的fabulous可以解释成前卫的意思,而condom是避孕套(-_-!).所有人听到这句话之后都回头看着Chandler,他说了句,...And then he burst into flames.意思是接着他便欲火焚身了...Chandler这也是无奈的自嘲,谁叫他老妈是这样的呢?
场景换到医院那边,Monica在给昏迷的帅哥读报纸,她读到,Let's see. Congress is debating a new deficit reduction bill... the mayor wants to raise subway fares again... the high today was forty-five... and- oh, teams played sports.句中的fare是票价的意思,后面的the high today was forty-five要解释下了,意思是今天最高气温45度.不要认为是我弄错了,人家用的是华氏温度(Fahrenheit degree),不是摄氏温度(centigrade temperature),所以华氏45度大概是摄氏7.2度,从华氏度变成摄氏度你只要减去32,乘以5再除以9就行了.一般人的正常体温是98.6华氏度.由于Monica根本不关心体育,所以当她读报读到体育版的时候她干脆一笔带过,teams played sports.场景换到一家餐厅,Mrs. Bing说,I am famished.这里的Famished是极其饥饿的意思,一般说很饿会用starving,而这里Mrs. Bing用的这个词有点文诹诹的,是为了配合其"作家"的身份.Chandler在一边酸溜溜的说但愿你不要点宫保鸡丁,Mrs. Bing马上意识到Chandler看了那期节目,问他觉得那个节目怎么样,Chandler说,Well, I think you need to come out of your shell just a little.这里的shell是指贝壳,暗喻Mrs. Bing应该收敛些,不用过于开放.这时Ross来了,自言自语道,What is this dive?这里的dive可不是跳水的意思了,这里是俚语的用法,意思是烂地方,A disreputable or run-down bar or nightclub.Mrs. Bing倒完酒之后,说, Well, I think we're ready for some tequila.Who's doing shots?句中的Tequila是龙舌兰酒,墨西哥特产,是一种蒸馏酒,酒精含量一般是38%到40%.40度.这句中又看到shot了,意思是谁要来一杯(尝一尝)?这时Rachel和Paolo急匆匆的跑来,郁闷的Ross马上拿起一杯酒一饮而尽.Rachel表达对Mrs. Bing的崇敬之情,Mrs. Bing说道,Oh, please, honey, listen, if I can do it, anybody can. You just start with half a dozen European cities, throw in thirty euphemisms for male genitalia, and bam! You have got yourself a book.句中的euphemisms是委婉的说法的意思.Mrs. Bing是告诉Rachel书是这么写成的:从描写五六个欧洲城市开始,中间穿插30段对男性生殖器的委婉描述,就成了一本书...(汗.....).句中的Throw in是指加入,插入的意思.过了一会儿Mrs. Bing在给酒店打电话查房间是否有电话留言,这时Ross从厕所出来了,看上去有点晕呼呼的样子,Mrs. Bing问道, You okay there, slugger?解释下句中的slugger,这个词可以有两种解释,一是指那种一拳可以把人打翻的猛男;还有一种就是指棒球里面那种经常打出本垒打的很厉害的击球手.这句话里面是第一种意思.Ross回到说我还好,这时他身后又走出来个女人,Ross吓倒了,这才发现他刚刚去的是女厕所,这里给大家介绍下背景大家会觉得很搞笑的.墨西哥是说西班牙语的,在墨西哥餐厅里面男厕所上会写"CHICOS",女厕所门上会写"CHICAS",西班牙语中词汇的阴阳只体现在词位的O/A上面,Ross本来就喝多了,又不懂西班牙语,所以误闯了女厕所.顺便介绍下,在美国,西班牙语也是一种很普遍的少数民族语言,一般在Florida和西南部几个州例如Texas, New Mexico等地很多人都会说西班牙语,一是因为像Texas, New Mexico和墨西哥接壤,再就是墨西哥有很多人非法越境到美国来寻求出路.熟悉历史的同学们应该知道美国西海岸的广袤土地是与墨西哥发生战争打过来的,其中包括Golden State--California.Mrs. Bing问Ross今晚怎么了闷闷不乐的,Ross说没有什么,Mrs. Bing说,It's the Italian Hand-Licker, isn't it.句中Hand-Licker是指Paolo,顺便说一下,英文中还有很多XXX-Licker,但是十有八九都是超级恶心的骂人的话,我不想教大家太多的英文中的脏话,但是如果有老外说你是XXX-licker,十有八九是在骂你了,而且是骂的很恶心的话,那么不要犹豫,直接冲过去把他打翻...(加上点黄飞鸿的背景音乐...).Mrs. Bing说Rachel应该和Ross在一起,并问Ross知道为什么她的书那么畅销,Ross说,The girl on the cover with her nipples showing?句中的nipple和之前108笔记中介绍的tits是一个意思.Ross的意思是,"是因为你书的封面上露了两点的女孩么?".Mrs. Bing解释道,No. Because I know how to write men that women fall in love with. Believe me, I cannot sell a Paolo. People will not turn three hundred twenty-five pages for a Paolo. C'mon, the guy's a secondary character, a, y'know, complication you eventually kill off.句中I cannot sell a Paolo的意思是,我不能拿Paolo(这种男人)作为(书中)的卖点,secondary character的意思是二流角色,二流货色.Complicaton是因素的意思,而kill off是指消灭.正当Ross和Mrs. Bing打啵的时候,被Joey给撞见了,他尴尬的说, I'll just pee in the street.句中的pee指小解.第二天早上一大早Ross紧张兮兮的去找Joey,问他告诉了Chandler他和Mrs. Bing打啵的事情没有,Joey说没有,Ross说那就不要告诉他,反正也不是什么大不了的事(not a big deal),这时Joey说,Right. No big deal.In Bizarro World!! You broke the code!这里的Bizarro World需要解释下了,字典上是找不到的,这个词汇来自于超人的故事里面,说的是有一天超人误闯进了一个类似于异次元空间的时空,里面的一切都是很现实世界一一对应的,但是都是相反的,例如左变右上变下高变矮胖变瘦.所以Joey说的意思是,不是什么大不了的事情才怪呢!!你坏了规矩了!Ross后来承认错误自责道,Okay, I'm scum.句中scum是泡沫渣滓的意思,引申为人渣.另外顺便说一下Ross和Joey扯理由用的Racquetball是壁球,也写作Racketball.Monica问他俩在干什么的时候,Joey回答,he's not even wearing a jockstrap!句中的Jockstrap是指男用的护裆(打壁球容易被球反弹击中,所以需要穿护具).Ross终于还是坦白告诉Chandler了,Chandler很生气,当他知道Joey知道却还没有告诉他的时候他质问Joey,Joey说,Uh... y'know, knowledge is a tricky thing.这里可以翻译成"知道这种事情很麻烦..."Chandler生气的对Ross说,Y'know, of all my friends, no-one knows the crap I go through with my mom more than you.我的朋友里面,没有谁比你更清楚我经历过的我妈的那些烂事了.说完就朝门口走去,并对Joey说,I'm still mad at you for not telling me.大家注意了,生某人的气是be mad at someone,可不是疯掉的意思哦!Chandler出门的时候生气的吼了句,You gotta let me slam the door!所以大家应该知道摔门怎么说了吧,对了,就是slam the door.
场景换到了Central Perk,Rachel开始了她的情色小说的创作,她说,Yeah. Thought I'd give it a shot. I'm still on the first chapter. I guess I'll see you around.意思就是,那我们以后再见面了.场景切换到Joey和Chandler的公寓,Joey趴在门上听Chandler和他妈妈谈话.这时被Ross看到了,Ross说,Ah, the forbidden love of a man and his door.这句比较搞笑.接着Joey给他讲里面两个人在说什么,说完了,Ross问那还有呢?Joey说,I dunno, I've been standing here spelling it out for you!这里又看到spell out了,还记得101里面那个Paul玩着苗条在那边装惆怅Monica问的那句"What, you wanna spell it out with noodles?"吗?意思是解释清楚,说明白的意思,大家注意复习.Mrs. Bing离开之后,Ross问Chandler和Mrs. Bing谈过之后怎么样,他说感觉很好,把郁闷都说出来了.Ross说,Well, see? So, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea, y'know, me kissing your mom, uh? Huh? Racquetball is a sport played with racquets and a hollow rubber ball on an indoor or outdoor court. It was invented by Joe Sobeck in 1949 incorporating rules from squash and handball.
